The Standard

Everything you need to know about this new apartment complex

_________________________________________________________________

Introduction

Welcome back readers to Honest Living, Honest Reviews where today we will be taking a look at the new apartment complex, the Standard! This place serves as a possible home for students attending the University of South Carolina, located in one of Columbia's first neighborhoods, Arsenal Hill. This housing tower boasts 17 stories with 678 beds (INSERT CITATION).

Though it looks and sounds quite grandiose from the outside, what is it like on the inside? This complex was only built in 2023, which means it is very new and worth exploring and researching into further. Students deserve to have an unbiased account about this place so that they can make informed decisions on whether this will be their new home for the next year of their lives.

Fear not, for that person is me, your humble Reviewer! I have toured this apartment complex and done my research in order to give you all the tools you need to be an informed student going forward. This blog post will discuss all the general information you will need, give descriptions of the complex as well as photos, and finally it will provide you with real perspectives on what it is like to live in the Standard from Standard residents themselves. Sit tight, buckle in, and get ready to figure out if this apartment complex fits your standards!

General information

Floor Plans/Units

Every apartment complex has certain floor plans and units, the good news is that through my research into the Standard, I have discovered a wide variety of them that you can choose from! There are options for a studio apartment as well as a one bedroom to five-bedroom apartment. As your humble Reviewer, I make it a priority to visit these places that I review, but I am pressed for time, so I was only able to tour the five-bedroom apartment.
My impression of it was that it is a very polished and cozy place. The walls appear to be a standard millennial beige, but the furnishings give the apartment itself some much needed color. Through my close inspection, I could find no details worth being concerned over, as I said before the whole place has a very polished look about it, probably an effect of the Standard being built so recently.  The layout that I was shown seemed to resemble that of a maze, with many narrow corridors that lead to the bedrooms, all of them going back to the main living area with a modestly small kitchen adjacent.
The good news I am happy to report, is that these apartments come fully furnished! To add on to the excitement, they also have an in-unit washing machine and dryer, a massive upgrade from communal washing machines and dryers if I do say so myself. This room seemed to have all the potential needed to set you on the right path in making this place your home! Everything is more spacious than one may assume, but do not just take my word for it! Take a look at the pictures, they will give you an insight into the look of the rooms.

Amenities

We already touched on this topic previously when it comes to amenities inside the apartment itself, but what about outside? You are in luck because the communal amenities are very impressive! The Standard is home to a computer lab, fitness center, academic lounge, pool, and multi-sport simulator. Everything you need as a student to be successful throughout your academic year.
I have personally seen each amenity as I went on the housing tour, and I can say with full confidence that they leave nothing to be desired. Everything seems up to date and well taken care of with clean environments that you can use at your leisure. These specific rooms looked very cozy indeed, especially the computer lab, though I must say that it did feel slightly cold and monotone in terms of the color scheme, but if a more modern look in an apartment complex is what you are looking for, I have no doubt this will please you greatly!
Now on to the question everyone has been waiting to ask, is the Standard pet friendly? You will be delighted I am sure to find out that it is! Our pets provide much needed assurance and comfort and are understandably deal breakers when it comes to apartments, so I am glad to report that you will not be forced to turn away from this housing complex so soon!
Please take the time to look into the pictures carefully taken from the tour that show some of the amenities themselves.

Leases/Rent

Now, down to the technical side of things that every person scouting for an apartment must be aware of. First to discuss the leases, there is a standard 12-month lease for each student, something commonly found for student apartments. Your lease will depend on your specific living situation, so if you found the information above to be intriguing and majorly positive, I encourage you to contact the Standard yourself and look into their leases, their contact information will be listed at the bottom of this blog post.
Second is the discussion of rent! Because of the diversity in floor plans/units, rent shifts around quite a bit according to how many bedrooms are in the apartment and the specific layout. For five-bedroom apartments, the rent ranges from 1,000-1,900 dollars a month, the specific price depending on the layout as stated before. Considering I am just your humble Reviewer, I cannot confirm whether these prices would work for you, it is a topic you must research yourself as it relates to your own personal budget. Here at HLHR we aim to provide you with all the information you need to be successful, so that you can make these decisions yourself with more assurance.

Parking/transportation

This is perhaps one of the most important categories for you to pay attention to my readers, because your means of getting to and from the apartment and the college you attend are crucial. Much can feel as if it is up in the air, are the buses reliable? Is there a parking garage? Is the campus within walking distance? Is it safe to be traveling alone? Fear not, for I have put in the time and effort to answer your many questions, so let us get into it!
There is a designated parking garage for you to use as your leisure, and I believe it is big enough to wear all residents will be guaranteed parking! This parking garage is exclusive to the apartment complex, so you will not have to worry about sharing with others in the area, it is there for you as the resident.
Now for those who do not have the availability of a car, the campus is a mile walk from the Standard. There are unfortunately no shuttles that will deliver you right from this apartment complex to campus, but there are stops half a mile walk away. Walking, I think would be an unfavorable option considering the distance, but if it is feasible for you, my athletic readers, then this is perfect! If you own a bike however, I could imagine the commute would be considerably lessened!
I myself arrived at the tour by way of the shuttles, walking the rest of the way to the Standard, the walk was not terrible, but I did have to cross some very busy intersections to get to the apartment itself. If pedestrian life is not your forte, I would not suggest choosing this apartment unless its charms are sufficient enough to change your ways.

Roommates

Last, but certainly not least, roommates! We all remember our freshmen year and even now, you dearest reader are probably a freshman yourself. The majority of us used roommate matching tools and apps to pick our roommate, the Standard offers this as an option as well!        Now say your current roommate has a nasty habit of leaving their dirty laundry on the floor or has failed to discover the concept of deodorant, or perhaps even they have a bad habit of inviting their boyfriend over five days a week at all hours of the day, fear not! The Standard gives you an opportunity to cut your losses and match with a completely new roommate. Now, to be completely transparent, I have not seen this matching system they speak of, but I am sure it works fine, and it is something you can look into with further detail if you decide the Standard is the home for you!

Resident Perspectives

Onto the most highly anticipated category yet, the perspectives of those who live in the Standard. Here at HLHR, privacy is something that is taken very seriously, so in the interest of keeping things appropriate, all those interviewed will be anonymous. To ensure you are provided with an unbiased account of the interviews, you will be reading the undisturbed answers I have obtained.

  1. What are the good and bad parts of living at The Standard?
    1.  There are good amenities such as a pool, gym and a tanning bed. The rooms are pretty soundproof, and the building is really aesthetically pleasing. However, the weights in the fitness center shake the entire floor and there are sometimes homeless people fighting on the sidewalk right outside of the building (interviewee one).
    2.  The good part of living here is that the building is really nice and new, you have your own bathroom and bedroom, there is a gym in the building as well as a pool, and it is within walking distance to the campus. The bad parts of living here are that the downtown area is a bit unpleasant, it is expensive especially when you add on parking which can be tight, and there are some Wi-Fi issues (interviewee two).
    3.  Some of the pros of living here are that there is good security, it is close to campus and downtown, and the maintenance team is very good at helping with any issues you might have. Some of the cons of living here include its price and some of the rooms being small (interviewee three).
  2. Would you recommend living at The Standard to others?
    1.  Yes, it is a pretty nice building to live in in a convenient location (interviewee one).
    2.  I would recommend living here since it’s a nice and new building (interviewee two).
    3.  Yes, absolutely (interviewee three).
  3.  Are there any hidden fees, etc. that aren’t told to you?
    1.  There are no hidden fees (interviewee one).
    2.  I am not sure if they are hidden but there is valet trash that you have to pay for and can’t opt out of, utilities, parking and some extra fines for what you do to your room (interviewee two).
    3.  I had to get out of one for automatic rent payment. There is valet trash that you have to pay for whether or not you use it (interviewee three)
